Microsoft has officially introduced Agent Mode in Excel and Word — along with Office Agent in Copilot Chat — making Office tools smarter, more autonomous, and deeply integrated with OpenAI’s latest reasoning models.
Users can now start with a simple prompt, and Copilot will organize a multi-step process to produce complete, high-quality results — spreadsheets, reports, and presentations — while you stay in control.
Agent Mode in Excel
Excel’s new Agent Mode turns data modeling into a natural conversation. It helps users analyze datasets, perform financial modeling, and build visual dashboards — all in plain language.
Ask Copilot: “Analyze this sales dataset and show me key insights visually,” and the agent will choose formulas, generate charts, and verify the outcome step by step.
It doesn’t just calculate — it reasons, checks, and refines results. From complex profit-and-loss reports to household budgets, Agent Mode in Excel acts like an expert analyst that works with you in real time.
After Excel, Microsoft brings the same agentic capabilities to Word — making document creation more interactive and intelligent.
Agent Mode in Word
Billions of documents are created in Word each month — now, writing them becomes faster and smarter. The new Agent Mode in Word transforms document creation into an interactive dialogue.
You can ask Copilot to “summarize customer feedback,” “update this project brief,” or “reformat the document according to our brand guide.”
The agent manages structure, clarity, and consistency — while you focus on ideas and meaning. This deeper collaboration means more fluid writing, better structure, and higher-quality drafts.
Office Agent in Copilot Chat
Work often starts in chat — and now so can your documents. Office Agent in Copilot Chat lets users create PowerPoint presentations and Word documents directly from a conversational interface.
Ask Copilot to “create a presentation on the top five trends in sportswear”, and it will:
- Clarify your goals and audience,
- Research the topic online,
- Generate a complete, ready-to-edit PowerPoint deck.
The result: visually consistent slides, well-structured Word documents, and a smoother workflow from idea to final content.
Availability Why it matters
Agent Mode in Excel and Word is now rolling out for Microsoft 365 Copilot users in the Frontier program and for subscribers of Personal, Family, and Premium plans.
Office Agent in Copilot Chat is available for U.S. users in the web version of Microsoft 365 Copilot (English).
Availability in additional regions — including Estonia and other EU countries — is expected later as Microsoft expands the rollout of Copilot’s new agent features across Europe.
Why it matters
